Havana Night Salsa Party, November 9th

Posted by Kendra on November 10, 2013 at 1:10 PM Comments comments (0)

We had our best turn out yet at our Havana Nights Salsa Party this month.  The crowd was a huge, but there was still plenty of room to do all our tricks comfortably.  We played some new music by Mayimbe and Prince Royce that people really loved.  It's such a great thing to be able to share our love for salsa and bachata with our friends.  We can't wait to do it all again next month.

Discovering New Salsa Music

Posted by Kendra on June 12, 2013 at 11:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Finding great salsa music is always my greatest challenge as a dancer, instructor, and as the occasional DJ here in Nashville.  My ears are always craving a fresh new sound to inspire new creativity in me and my fellow salseros. But surprisingly, when I search for new salsa music, I typically find great songs from the 1970's that I never heard before.  The song might be new to me, but I know it's very old to someone else.

This week, I've stumbled across a great artist named Javier Vazquez.  He is a Cuban pianist who composed several great salsa tracks back in the 1970's, and I'm sorry to say that I'm just now discovering him.  Better late than never I guess. Two of my favorites by him include "Se Formo la Rumbantela" and "Don Anastacio."    Check them out below and see if this music gets you grooving as well, and check out his other tracks on Youtube as well.  His music is consistently good.  I haven't heard a bad track yet.  Might be buying up all his music soon.

Casa Azafran starts next Thursday Night, May 2nd

Ibiza nightclub has been our regular Thursday night salsa spot for over 8 years now, so the salsa community was crushed to see our Thursday night salsa get cancelled.  Luckily, long time Ibiza instructors Martin and Raven plan on filling our Thursday night void with their very own salsa social at Casa Azafran on Nolensville Pike.

Casa Azafran is truly a beautiful studio space with great hardwood floors that let you turn and spin with ease.  We've already had great times there before at salsa socials put on by Sentir el Ritmo, and I can't wait to make this studio our new regular salsa spot from now on.

This Thursday Martin and Raven will be leading a beginner/intermediate salsa lesson from 8-8:30pm and open dancing will go from 8:30p-12am spun by DJ George .  It just $5 to dance all night long, so be sure not to miss it! This social will happen weekly starting Thursday May 2nd.

Every Wednesday night a Play Dancebar, the salseros take over and bring a fun mix of dances to this internationally known gay bar.  The event is organized by one of Nashville's most passionate dance advocates, Tonya Miller.  She has a passion for bringing together several different types of dance communities in one place to have a great time.  Every Wednesday at 7:15pm, she rotates between dances such as salsa, bachata, west coast swings, tango, rumba, kizomba, and more.  Open dancing starts at 8:30pm and usually goes until 10:45pm.  It's a lot of fun and completely FREE.  So please come out to join us this week!

Mad Donna's Salsa Saturday

Posted by Kendra on February 25, 2013 at 12:05 AM Comments comments (0)

Mad Donna's was packed last night, making a cold winter day seem more like summer in the upstairs loft of this east Nashville restaurant.  The night started strong with a packed lesson at 9:30pm, and the dancing didn't let up until 2am.  There were a lot of new faces, and out of towners.  I danced with one girl from Canada who was craving some Cuban style salsa dancing, and I was happy to oblige.  Also, I learned a new line dance.  No idea what it was called, but I was feeling it. Anyway, can't wait for another 4th Saturday to do it all over again.  Thanks Pablo for another great night!
