Cuban salsa,
in a circle.

Nashville Rueda is Music City’s home for casino, rueda de casino and Afro-Cuban movement. We teach the real thing — the turn patterns, the calls, the clave, the attitude — in a room where absolute beginners and seasoned dancers share the same circle and the same joy.

About us

We are the circle that never stops turning.

Nashville Rueda started in 2016 as five friends meeting in a living room in East Nashville with a phone speaker and a lot of curiosity. Cuban casino is a social dance first and a performance second — it lives in the circle, in the call, in the laughter when a pattern unravels and in the electricity when four couples land the same figure on the same beat.

Today we run fourteen weekly classes across Music City, host live timba nights with local and touring Cuban bands, bring international instructors to town every season, and send delegations to congresses across the United States. Our curriculum is built on the traditional rueda de casino vocabulary from Santiago and Havana, then broadened with modern timba styling, body movement and musicality work.

What has never changed is the welcome. You can walk in knowing nothing, with no partner, no special shoes and no rhythm — and still be dancing a call-and-response rueda by the end of your first hour. That is the whole point. Cuban dance is a people’s dance, and in Nashville it belongs to everyone who shows up.

Classes & levels

Find your level, then break it.

Every track runs in eight-week series with a rotating syllabus, so you can join at the start of any cycle and still build a complete, confident vocabulary. No audition, no partner required.

01

Casino Foundations

Your first steps in Cuban salsa: the basic guapea, the Cuban walk, dile que no, enchufla and the musical structure of a casino song. Everything is taught in a circle from day one.

  • Mondays & Wednesdays
  • 8-week series
  • Zero experience needed
02

Casino Intermediate

Longer figures, hand-lead variations, vacilala, setenta family, and your first taste of rueda switching. We start layering styling, dissociation and tension so your dance stops looking like a count and starts looking like music.

  • Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • Partnerwork + rueda
  • Recommended: 3 months dancing
03

Rueda de Casino

The signature class. Calls in Spanish, rapid partner changes, five- and six-couple formations and the improvisational chaos that makes rueda the most fun you can have standing in a circle.

  • Fridays
  • All levels welcome
  • Call list provided
04

Timba & Body Movement

Afro-Cuban isolations, rumba-influenced movement, despelote and tembleque fundamentals. This is where your dancing gets its flavour — the difference between knowing the steps and owning them.

  • Saturdays
  • Solo or partnered
  • Great cross-training
05

Performance Team

An audition-based troupe that represents Nashville Rueda at festivals and congresses. Choreography, stage presence, rueda formations for the stage, and a lot of very early Saturday rehearsals.

  • By audition
  • Seasonal commitments
  • Travelling team
06

Private & Group Coaching

Wedding first dances, small private groups, bachelorette parties or a focused one-on-one block to fix that one figure that keeps escaping you. Booked by the hour or by the series.

  • Flexible scheduling
  • All levels
  • Off-site available
Weekly schedule

Seven days of timba.

Doors open fifteen minutes before every class. Drop-ins are welcome in Rueda Lab and Social Night; series classes prefer a full-cycle commitment so the group progresses together.

Questions

Everything you were about to ask.

Do I need a partner to join a class?

No. Rueda de casino is danced in a circle and we rotate partners constantly, so everyone dances with everyone. You can come alone and you will never sit out. If you do bring a partner, you will still rotate — that is the whole point of the format.

I have never danced anything in my life. Is this for me?

Especially for you. Casino is built on a simple walking basic and a call-and-response structure, which makes it one of the most beginner-friendly social dances in the world. Our Foundations series assumes zero experience, zero rhythm training and zero confidence — and by week three you will be laughing through full rueda.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes that let you pivot — a smooth sole helps, but socks or dance sneakers work fine. Bring a water bottle. We have a filtered water station and a shoe rack, and the floor is wooden and well maintained.

Is Cuban salsa different from LA or New York salsa?

Yes, quite different. Casino is danced on a circular, rotational path rather than a linear slot, with a Cuban motion driven by the hips and the son rhythm. The music is timba — denser, more percussive and full of breaks — and rueda adds a caller who directs the whole circle. If you have danced linear salsa, you will recognise some figures, but the feel is a whole new world.

How do I know which level to join?

Come to any Foundations class first — it is free for new dancers and will tell you immediately where you belong. If you already dance casino, message us and we will place you in Intermediate or Advanced after a short conversation about your vocabulary and your ear for the music.

Do you host private events or corporate workshops?

We do: weddings, birthdays, team-building sessions, cultural programming for schools and universities, and festival demonstrations. Reach out with your date, group size and what you have in mind, and we will design a session around it.
